The Stables

The Stables lie in a tranquil setting above the town of Cromarty, half a mile up the hill towards the top of the South Sutor.

This imposing Georgian building was converted in 1995 to accommodate a Gallery, West Wing area, ground floor artists’ studios, toilets and a one-bedroomed flat (sleeps 2), which is rented out on a long-term basis.

The entire venue or individual areas can be hired for weddings, conferences, concerts, exhibitions, workshops, rehearsals and sound recordings.

  

Outside, the slope of the grounds around the u-shaped building form a natural amphitheatre creating a perfect setting for open air theatrical and cultural events.

The Stables path has inscriptions from the writings of Sir Thomas Urquhart. Richard Kindersley, the celebrated master stone letter carver, completed this project a few years ago with a group of apprentices; the new stonework has added to the character of this Grade A-listed Building.

The Stables has a full Public Entertainment Licence and can accommodate a maximum of 120 guests at functions. The Gallery dimensions are 17m x 6m.  There is a car parking area, lawn & grounds and a downstairs 'tea point' with sinks, kettle, microwave and fridge. There is wifi, though it is rather patchy and a mobile signal can only be accessed from certain spots within the grounds.

This stunning location is the perfect space for imaginative thinkers, getting your creative juices flowing or just soaking up the sea views and rural peace.

Please note: we regret that the majority of the Stables building is not suitable for wheelchair access. There is one disabled toilet on the ground floor but the main Gallery room and West Wing are accessed only by two flights of stairs with no alternative options.

Stables Flat

A cosy, fully-furnished one double bedroom flat within the Stables complex is occasionally available for long-term let. With beautiful views, inspirational, peaceful atmosphere and parking, the flat comprises double bedroom, living room/kitchen, bathroom and hall and is a 15 min walk to the centre of the town.

Particularly suited to an artist, writer or musician looking for an inspiring, creative and calming environment. 

   

  

£500 per calendar month inc free Wi-Fi.  Electricity, council tax & phone calls are extra.

Stables Studios

The Game Store is a bright, airy studio situated in the grounds of the Stables complex.  It is available for artists on a short term or longer term basis. 

There are six artist bays in the main Stables building.  These bays are made available to local artists on a long-term basis, but occasionally bays become available so please email if you are interested in finding out more or going on a waiting list.  Each artists pays the following contribution to overheads.

Studio Bays                        £102 per month (includes VAT)
Game Store Studio           £180 per month (includes VAT)

The 7th bay is a smaller area and used by visiting or residential artists on a short-term, temporary basis.
